Before You Begin
Please read through all installation steps before starting work on your vehicle. These are general guidelines that apply to most Griffin radiator installations. Always refer to any vehicle-specific instructions included with your product. If you have questions at any point during installation, contact our technical support team at 1-800-722-3723.
Initial Inspection
Carefully unbox your new Griffin radiator and inspect it for any shipping damage. Check that all accessories and hardware are included. Compare the new radiator to your old one to verify correct fitment, inlet/outlet positions, and mounting points before beginning removal of the old unit.
- Unbox carefully and inspect for any damage
- Check that all accessories and hardware are included
- Compare the new radiator to the old unit for correct fitment
Check Supporting Parts
Before installing the new radiator, inspect all supporting components in the cooling system. Old or worn parts can compromise the performance of your new Griffin radiator.
- Hoses: Replace any cracked, swollen, or deteriorated hoses
- Clamps: Use new, high-quality hose clamps for a secure seal
- Thermostat: Consider replacing the thermostat if it has not been changed recently
Flush the System
If the engine block or cooling system shows signs of contamination, rust, or scale buildup, flush the system thoroughly before installing the new radiator. Contaminated coolant passages in the block can reduce cooling efficiency and damage your new radiator.
Fan Preparation
If you are installing a Griffin Combo Unit (radiator with integrated electric fan and shroud), you must remove the existing mechanical fan and fan clutch from the engine. The mechanical fan is no longer needed and will interfere with the electric fan assembly.
- Remove the mechanical fan and fan clutch assembly
- Retain the water pump pulley and belt
- Ensure adequate clearance for the electric fan shroud
Mounting the Radiator
Proper mounting is essential to prevent stress cracks and premature failure. Follow these key guidelines when securing the radiator in the vehicle:
- No binding or twisting: The radiator must sit squarely in the mounting position without being forced
- Use rubber supports: Always use rubber isolator mounts to absorb vibration and prevent metal-to-metal contact
- Do not over-tighten: Snug the mounting bolts firmly but do not over-torque. This can crack tanks and distort headers
- No sealant on temp sender: Do not use thread sealant or Teflon tape on temperature sender fittings. Use only the gasket or O-ring provided
Coolant Selection
The type of water you use in your cooling system directly affects radiator longevity and performance. Griffin strongly recommends the following:
- Use distilled water only. Never use tap water or well water
- Tap and well water contain minerals that cause scale buildup and accelerate corrosion
- For street applications, use a 50/50 mix of quality antifreeze and distilled water
- For racing applications, use 100% distilled water (or distilled water with an approved wetting agent)
