The long-dormant fastback coupe silhouette suddenly returned to prominence in the 1960s as a symbol of speed and style, and Dodge jumped on the trend to create the 1966 Dodge Charger. This big, bold fastback could be every bit as potent as it was pretty.
Between 1962 and 1964, Chrysler Corporation stylists were among the busiest in the industry, and for good reason. The "Forward Look" fins of the 1950s were dead, and the new styling direction set by Virgil Exner had stumbled in the marketplace, partly due to controversial downsizing decisions made by former Chrysler president William Newberg. Chrysler's market share plummeted, and Exner was replaced in the fall of 1961 by Elwood Engel from Ford. Engel had orders from Chrysler President Lynn Townsend to bring the company's styling back into the mainstream, and the design staff worked overtime to make it happen.
Despite their heavy workload, competitive pressures forced Chrysler to develop two new specialty vehicles. Engel knew about the pony car Ford was developing in Dearborn, and he pushed Chrysler's leadership to respond. The first answer was the 1964 Plymouth Barracuda, a capable car but an incomplete response to the Ford Mustang. The second was the Dodge Charger, which followed the Barracuda to market 22 months later.
Both the Barracuda and the Charger shared a fastback design signature. Both were "make-from" cars, meaning their differences from their respective Valiant and Coronet siblings were concentrated in the roof, backlight, and decklid. Despite these shared economics, the Charger carved out its own identity as a larger, more muscular machine.
The 1968 and 1969 Dodge Charger models took the nameplate to another level entirely. The redesigned Charger wore one of the most striking body designs of the muscle car era, and the performance backed up the looks. A 440-Magnum Charger R/T could reach 60 mph in six and a half seconds or less, while a Hemi-equipped car could threaten the five-second barrier. The $604.75 Hemi option was worth every penny for those who appreciated that kind of acceleration.
The Charger's advertising leaned hard into its aggressive personality, and the car delivered on every promise. These are some of the most iconic muscle cars ever built, and they require cooling systems that can handle serious heat.
