The 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle was starting to make competitors nervous. Smaller engine choices were dropped in favor of more horsepower, and the entire car received a thorough redesign featuring restyled body panels, a new grille and rear panel, updated interiors, and the famous Chevrolet "coke bottle" shape. The 1966 Chevelle boasted a more stylish roofline and an altogether fresh look and feel. The Super Sport variant was renamed the "SS396" to proudly announce the new powerplant, and a pair of hood ornaments completed the transformation.
The 1966 Chevelle was available in several trim levels: the Chevelle 300, Chevelle 300 Deluxe, Chevelle Malibu, and Chevelle Super Sport. Every configuration except the SS could be ordered with a six-cylinder engine; V8 power was available across the board. Body styles ranged from two-door sport coupes, sedans, and convertibles to four-door sedans and both two-door and four-door wagons.
Interiors could be fitted with bucket seats or bench seats in a wide variety of colors, including Aqua, Black, Light Blue, Bright Blue, Bronze, Fawn, Red, and White, among others. The exterior color palette was equally generous, with options ranging from Tuxedo Black and Provincial White to Marina Blue Metallic, Regal Red, Lemonwood Yellow, and many more. Vinyl tops were offered exclusively in black.
The 1966 Chevelle represented Chevrolet's mid-size lineup at its finest, blending style, power, and versatility in a package that appealed to everyone from commuters to drag racers.
