The Ford Falcon made its debut on October 3, 1959, introducing an entirely new kind of car to Ford's lineup. It was an American compact, the type of car that company founder Henry Ford might have admired, bringing many of the same affordable, practical ideals that had driven the Model T half a century earlier.
The Falcon was one of three new compacts introduced by the Big Three automakers for the 1960 model year. After several marketing missteps in the 1950s, most notably the Edsel, the team at Ford's Dearborn headquarters was cautiously optimistic. Their caution proved unnecessary. By the end of its first model year, the Falcon had won the compact car sales race by a commanding margin.
The compact car movement gained momentum in the mid-1950s as European imports, particularly the Volkswagen Beetle, carved out a growing share of the American market. The Beetle's basic design had proven both popular and dependable, and its success encouraged other European manufacturers to try their luck on American shores. Individually these imports posed little threat, but collectively they represented a sales trend that Detroit could no longer ignore.
Ford's answer was the Falcon: simple, affordable, and thoroughly conventional in its engineering. It delivered honest fuel economy and low operating costs, backed by Ford's extensive dealer network. The Falcon proved so successful that it spawned the platform that would eventually underpin one of the most famous cars in history, the Ford Mustang.
