The Chevrolet Nova did as much for Chevy as any compact car has ever done for its maker. Its roots trace back to the 1962 model year, when it arrived to rescue a division that had staked its compact car hopes on the quirky, rear-engine Corvair. The Corvair had debuted for 1960, but buyers were already turning away from the unconventional design, and its safety controversies would drive even more customers to the competition.
Into that gap rolled a front-engine compact with conventional good looks, low prices, and a solid lineup of sedan, hardtop, and convertible body styles. Chevrolet called it the Chevy II. That name doubled as the label for the entry-level models, while sportier versions wore the Nova badge. Sales were strong from the start, and by 1963 the Nova could be ordered with Chevy's hot Super Sport package.
By 1968, the Chevy II name had been dropped entirely and the full lineup operated under the Chevrolet Nova banner. That same year brought a redesign with curvaceous new styling that gave the compact a more muscular presence. By 1969, with the Corvair gone, Nova stood as Chevrolet's smallest car. Buyers could now order a 375-horsepower 396-cubic-inch V8, creating a lightweight muscle car that remains revered to this day.
The basic 1968 design served the Nova well through the 1970s, with the Chevrolet Vega eventually sliding in below it as Chevy's entry-level offering. The Nova nameplate was finally retired in 1979, only to resurface in 1986 on a modern front-wheel-drive subcompact built in a joint venture with Toyota in California. Throughout its life, the Nova always represented sensible value and, on more than a few occasions, serious fun.
