The arrival of the Jeep Wagoneer in the fall of 1962 was a watershed moment for both the Jeep brand and an entire class of vehicles that would emerge over the following four decades. The Wagoneer brought together four-wheel drive, ample passenger and cargo room, and increasing levels of luxury in a way that had never been done before. It was, in many ways, the original luxury SUV.
Willys Motors, a division of Kaiser Industries since 1953, had dominated the light-duty four-wheel-drive market for years. The company had been producing the CJ, the civilian version of the famous wartime Jeep, since mid-1945, and introduced four-wheel-drive trucks in 1947. But when International Harvester launched its Scout line of modern four-wheel-drive vehicles for 1961, Jeep suddenly faced serious competition. The Scout targeted the CJ market with more room and comfort, and Willys management knew they needed to respond.
In early 1961, funding was approved for an ambitious new-product program that would include an entirely new range of Jeep vehicles and a new engine. Chief engineer A.C. Sampietro handled the mechanical development while the styling job went to Brooks Stevens, the talented independent designer Willys had on retainer, and the small in-house styling staff under Jim Angers.
Stevens had been through this before. A similar assignment during the mid-1940s had produced the original Jeep Station Wagon in 1946. The four-wheel-drive version that followed in 1949 was arguably the first sport utility vehicle ever built. But the competitive landscape had changed dramatically. In the late 1950s, International, Dodge, Chevrolet, GM, Ford, and Studebaker all began offering factory-built four-wheel-drive versions of their conventional light trucks.
What Stevens developed, after extensive clay studies and countless sketches, was an attractive station wagon with fashionable, almost elegant lines. Introduced in November 1962, the Jeep Wagoneer was larger than the old Jeep wagons and could comfortably carry six passengers. It established the template that every luxury SUV, from the Range Rover to the Cadillac Escalade, would eventually follow.
These Jeep models from the 1970s and 1980s, including the Wagoneer, CJ, and Cherokee, continue to command a devoted following. Griffin Thermal Products builds exact-fit aluminum radiators for 1970s and 1980s Jeep models, delivering the cooling performance these versatile vehicles deserve.
