The 1973 Chevrolet Camaro lineup introduced the Type LT (Luxury Touring) coupe, signaling a shift away from pure performance and toward refined grand touring. Essentially replacing the departed Super Sport, the LT came standard with a 145-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 engine and a surprisingly generous list of standard equipment.
At $3,268 compared to $2,872 for the standard V8 coupe, the extra $396 bought variable-ratio power steering, black rocker panels and body accents, streamlined sport mirrors, Rally wheels, a woodgrain dashboard, a full set of instruments, deluxe upholstery, and considerably more sound insulation. A 175-horsepower variant of the 350 V8 was available in either the base or LT coupe, while entry-level Camaros could be ordered with a 250-cubic-inch six or 307-cubic-inch V8.
Chevrolet did an admirable job adapting the Camaro to meet the new bumper-impact regulations for 1973. The front and rear bumpers retained their previous appearance but were moved farther from the body and reinforced with brackets, braces, and an inner support bar. The Z28 remained available as a $598 option, featuring front and rear spoilers, performance tires on five-spoke wheels, and contrasting stripes. Of the 96,751 Camaros produced for 1973, 11,574 were Z28s.
The Z28's 350-cubic-inch V8, now running hydraulic lifters instead of solid units, lost 10 horsepower to land at a still-respectable 245. The engine dropped its costly high-rise aluminum intake manifold, and Turbo Hydra-Matic became the sole automatic option. These were also the first Z28s to offer optional air conditioning. Sales had been sluggish earlier in the decade, and GM executives seriously considered dropping both the Camaro and its Pontiac Firebird cousin. Each model earned a reprieve, largely because they served as valuable image cars for the corporation, even when sales fell below expectations.
