The 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chevy's rear-drive personal luxury car, dropped its base model for the year and received slightly revised taillights. The lineup consisted of LS and SS models, with the SS available as both a notchback coupe and the distinctive fastback Aerocoupe.
The Aerocoupe was a limited-production special first introduced for 1986, when only 200 were built to homologate the design for NASCAR stock car racing. For 1987, production was somewhat less limited, with a total of 6,052 units built. These Aerocoupes remain highly collectible today thanks to their racing connection and limited numbers.
The standard engine in the 1987 Monte Carlo LS was a throttle-body-injected 4.3-liter V6, now producing five additional horsepower for a total of 145. It was backed by a three-speed automatic transmission. Optional for the LS was the base 5.0-liter carbureted V8 making 150 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic that was also optional on the V6. The SS models received the high-output carbureted 5.0-liter V8 with 180 horsepower.
The 1988 model year brought the Monte Carlo's final chapter as a rear-drive coupe. It became Chevy's sole remaining rear-drive six-passenger coupe after the full-size Caprice two-door was discontinued following 1987. The four-speed automatic became standard equipment, and the Aerocoupe version of the SS was dropped. Just over 30,000 Monte Carlos were built in this swan-song season, with more than half carrying the SS badge. After a run of 19 years, the Monte Carlo nameplate was retired, though it would return in the 1990s on a very different platform.
