The 1953 Dodge Coronet Eight Convertible was the collectible soft-top that ushered in Dodge's first V8 engine. The famous Red Ram was essentially a scaled-down version of the Chrysler Hemi, featuring smooth manifolding and porting, oversized valves set well apart, excellent thermal efficiency, and considerable high-performance potential.
The 1953 Dodge line was restyled by Virgil Exner, who had come to Chrysler from Studebaker in 1949. The new designs looked lighter and less stodgy than earlier models. The V8-powered cars performed impressively while still offering solid economy; one returned 23.4 mpg in the 1953 Mobilgas Economy Run, while other Red Ram-equipped Dodges were busy breaking 196 North American stock car speed records at Bonneville.
By 1965, the Coronet name graced a versatile mid-size lineup. Convertibles like the 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 came in a wide selection of flavors. Dodge offered an impressive range of soft tops that year, spanning the compact Dart 270 and fancier Dart GT, the mid-size Coronet 440 and Coronet 500, plus the full-size Polara and Custom 880. Six different convertibles in one brand's lineup was a remarkable showing, even by 1960s standards.
From the early Hemi-powered models of the 1950s through the muscular Super Bee variants of the late 1960s, the Dodge Coronet lineage produced some of Mopar's most exciting cars.
