Ford trucks of the 1930s were rugged, capable workhorses powered by the same flathead V8 that made Ford's passenger cars famous. Despite the success of the V8 in cars, Ford was sometimes criticized for not offering an economy engine option in its truck line. In 1937, the company responded by introducing a radically downsized V8 displacing just 136 cubic inches and producing 60 horsepower, a significant step down from the original 221-cubic-inch engine rated at 85 horsepower. While the difference did not look dramatic on paper, the smaller engine simply lacked adequate power in practice, and like the four-cylinder it replaced, it was soon discontinued.
Ford also entered the transit-bus business in 1937 with the introduction of a forward-control chassis that placed the engine to one side, allowing the driver to sit beside it rather than behind it. Fancier Deluxe trim became available on trucks for the first time that year as well.
New styling for 1937 placed the headlights partially into the fenders, giving the trucks a more integrated, modern appearance. The Sedan Delivery model gained a split, V-shaped windshield, another 1937 innovation. Interior room improved thanks to a newly available rear-mounted spare tire, which freed up valuable space in the cargo compartment.
All 1937 Ford pickups came equipped with a V8 engine and wore the appropriate badge on the hood. The new 136-cubic-inch 60-horsepower version promised better fuel economy for buyers who did not need the full 85 horsepower of the larger engine.
