The Ford station wagon first appeared as a 1929 Model A, its body constructed of birch or maple supplied by the Mingel Company of Kentucky. Assembly was handled by Murray and Briggs in Detroit until 1935, when Ford began building these bodies in-house at a plant in Iron Mountain on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The location was ideal, with nearby hardwood forests minimizing transportation costs.
The 1935 Model 48 Fords wore a fuller look than their predecessors, with smaller windows and a more prominently V-shaped grille. Sedans gained an integral trunk for the first time, eliminating the increasingly old-fashioned external trunk rack and spare tire, though the new design added a somewhat bulky bustle to the rear. Under the hood, a new camshaft and improved crankcase ventilation further enhanced the already lively flathead V8. The frame and rear axle were beefed up to handle the increased demands.
Ford retained its exceedingly simple suspension from Model T days: a solid axle on a transverse leaf spring at each end. This archaic setup would not be replaced for another 13 years. Mechanical brakes likewise persisted through 1939, leaving Ford distinctly behind the times. Old Henry believed simpler was better, and he was nothing if not stubborn. He did concede to steel wheels, however, which replaced traditional wire wheels after 1935.
Changes for 1936 were minor but effective. A longer, more pointed hood and a more sharply V-shaped grille freshened the look. Horns now sounded from behind small covered openings flanking the grille, following the industry trend of concealing previously exposed components. Standard and DeLuxe became distinct series for 1936, with the DeLuxe listing twice as many body styles as the Standard, fourteen compared to seven.
