Late Model Ford Bronco

The Ford Bronco received a major redesign for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series truck overhaul. The new full-size Bronco was shorter than its predecessor and featured cosmetic updates along with significant changes to the powertrain, suspension, and other components. The most notable mechanical change was the replacement of the live front axle with a Dana 44 Twin Traction Beam (TTB) independent front suspension setup. The TTB was a hybrid of true independent front suspension and a solid front axle, using a pivoting axle arm around the differential with coil springs instead of leaf springs.

The TTB system offered noticeably better on-road control and comfort while still maintaining respectable off-road capability. However, it sacrificed wheel travel compared to a solid axle and earned a reputation for being difficult to keep aligned when running tires larger than stock. These characteristics have made the TTB setup a frequent topic of debate among Bronco enthusiasts.

Cosmetic changes continued through the 1980s. Ford returned to using its "blue oval" logo on a slightly redesigned grille for 1982 and removed the "FORD" lettering from the hood. Power low-mount swing-lock mirrors became available in 1981, while the classic square mirrors and optional power versions were discontinued in 1986. The full-size Bronco continued through 1996, earning a devoted following among off-road enthusiasts and collectors alike.
