Just months after the first Pontiac Firebirds reached customers in 1967, developers were already busy with the next generation. This time, the 1970s Firebird would not simply accept Chevrolet's hand-me-downs. Pontiac stylists and engineers joined their Chevrolet counterparts from the earliest stages of development, ensuring the Firebird would have its own distinct character.
The basic profile was decided fairly early. Aiming at mass-market appeal, the new Firebird would be a sleek, slippery semi-fastback wearing a trunk lid and minimal chrome. A bold split grille and bumper were combined into a color-keyed Endura plastic nose, following the lead of the 1969 facelift. Nearly everything else looked fresh, a radical departure from the original F-body platform.
Deleting the rear quarter windows created the close-coupled look of a two-seater, with substantial B-pillars and lengthy door windows. To many eyes, the new Firebird, with its reduced-height cowl, appeared significantly longer and lower. The actual dimensions had not changed much, but few disputed the car's newly aggressive, taut demeanor.
Pontiac's stylists wanted a softer, more muscular look that was less angular than the Camaro's shape, and they succeeded. Designers experimented with Targa roofs, notchback and full fastback bodies, and concealed headlamps during development. A convertible was considered, but falling ragtop sales killed its prospects. The result was one of the most beautiful American cars of the 1970s, particularly in Trans Am trim with its iconic hood bird and shaker scoop.
